In 2016, Sergo Tbileli drew inspiration from his hometown, Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, to create a new series. His love for the city’s charming streets and traditional art techniques drove him to conceptualize a collection that truly encapsulated the spirit of Tbilisi, which he named “Tbiliso Oh My Tbiliso.” With a dozen graphics in mind, he embarked on a journey to create a series that pushed the boundaries of his art.
Sergo immersed himself in experimentation, drawing on familiar techniques from ceramics and Georgian partition enamel art to develop a new method that seamlessly merged old and new. The result is a breathtaking collection of works that perfectly blend traditional and contemporary art.
Initially, Sergo envisioned the series as intricate and detailed miniatures, using a new multilayered approach that his cold enamel technique allowed. This technique enabled colors to be layered, resulting in pigments shining through in particularly different ways.
Since beginning the series, Sergo has created a total of seventy-two designs, which have been acquired by private collectors, businessmen, presidents, and international officials. Over time, he has further developed the series, creating larger-scale versions of the miniatures and expanding beyond enamel paintings to create artworks on different materials.
For Sergo, “Tbiliso Oh My Tbiliso” is a personal topic that represents his relationship with Tbilisi and how he sees the city. His intricate allusions to each street and the warm colors that radiate positivity in his works showcase his love for the city. Each design and painting in the series having true stories connected to them.
